Keyboards and Pianos Department
The story
Keyboard instruments have a long and varied history, beginning with the organ, one of the first such instruments, invented in ancient Greece in the 3rd century BC and perfected during the Middle Ages. The organ remained dominant until the Renaissance, when keyboard instruments such as the harpsichord and clavichord were introduced. These instruments, featuring plucked or struck strings, paved the way for the invention of the piano.
The piano was developed in the early 18th century by the Italian Bartolomeo Cristofori, who created an instrument that could vary the intensity of the sound depending on the pressure applied to the keys. This development revolutionized music, allowing for greater expressiveness.
In the 20th century, technological advances led to the emergence of electronic keyboards and synthesizers, instruments capable of generating new and innovative sounds. Synthesizers, introduced in the 1960s by pioneers such as Robert Moog, transformed pop, rock and electronic music, becoming essential for creating modern and futuristic sounds. Today, keyboard instruments remain essential in a wide range of musical genres, from classical to electronic.
